Researchers at Beijing’s Tsinghua University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), have found that increasing the amount of magnesium you consume may aid in preventing memory lapses as we age.

For adults the recommended daily intake of magnesium is 400 mg/day in men and the recommended daily dose for women who are not yet pregnant.

The study appears in the January 28, 2010 issue of journal Neruon, and demonstrates that increasing brain magnesium using a new compound, magnesium-L-threonate (MgT for short), aids learning, working memory as well as short and long term memory in rats.

The mineral also assisted older rats do better on the tests for learning carried out by the researchers. Guosong Liu, MIT’s first researcher in magnesium, found it may aid in memory and learning. His team have since developed a novel magnesium substance that is more effective than conventional supplements for improving the magnesium levels within the brain.

The researchers studied the effects of MgT on synaptic activity. Synapses are the junctions between neurons that are vital for transmitting signals from nerves. Old and young rats saw an increase in synaptic strength due to MgT. The increased density was seen in the hippocamp, which is the brain’s region that plays a significant role in long-term memory and spatial navigation.

“This study does not just highlight the importance of a healthy diet that is rich in magnesium however, it also suggests the efficacy of magnesium-based treatments to combat aging-related memory loss” Says study’s co-author Susumu Tonegawa. He works at the MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory.

Recognizing that ageing can cause some reduction in the capacity to recall memories when not all information is available as it should be, the researchers conducted different research as part of the study.

The study found that MgT treatment improved memory recall in older rats, under limited information conditions but not so in younger animals.

The authors of the study note that the rats that were used as controls were fed an ordinary diet with sufficient magnesium. The effects observed in the studies were due to elevation of magnesium to the levels that are higher than you would experience in a normal diet.

According to Liu, half of the world’s population could be suffering from magnesium deficiencies.
